Believe Divergent was founded with a clear objective: To continue the important uncomfortable conversations and challenge people to think about every situation in different ways.
What Does Believe Divergent Mean?
In many of the videos I've created, the root of the idea is just to get people to think differently about situations. Think different would have been a great name had it not been a slogan for Apple in the early 2000s. I then took my own advice and looked for a different way to say that and found the synonyms Believe and Divergent for Think and Different respectively.
This brand was born as an idea to help expand the way that we view the world and to encourage everyone to look at the bigger picture.
I've always shied away from talking about race, but, after the murder of George Floyd I knew I had to change that. I wanted to find a way to keep the conversation about racial justice and equality going.
As someone who has always been into fashion, I figured, what better way to spark a conversation than with thought-provoking clothing. Starting with simple but powerful t-shirts, I hope to grow this brand as the centerpiece to having those tough conversations.
Mainly, continue designing clothing that allow people to express themselves.
While the current focus is BLM, I hope for this brand to be an Ally in all fights for justice, while also throwing in some cool designs just for fun.
Beyond clothing, I aspire to make this site a hub for the resources that I can provide. Currently that is mainly videos presenting various viewpoints or sharing my thoughts to start a dialogue.
My name is Ikey Ajavon. 27 yr old marketing professional. Some would say a super cool dude. Currently residing in Brooklyn, NY.
I've always have had an interest in fashion, so much so, that I wrote my Master's dissertation on Gucci Advertising and the subtle racist imagery they include. I started sharing some of the research and data I collected from my studies through video, which sparked this whole idea.
